The Register of Charities
The Register of Charities is maintained by the Charities Regulator and lists all charities that are registered in Ireland on or after 16 October 2014. The Register includes details such as the charity’s charitable purpose, trustees’ names, employment and volunteer numbers, annual reports, financial information, governance code status, and classification.
All Irish national schools, voluntary secondary schools, and community schools operate as independent charitable bodies (AKA charities), and as such must comply with the Charities Act 2009. A failure to update details with the Charities Regulator is an offence under that Act for both the charity, and for the charity trustees. Penalties for non-compliance can include fines and imprisonment as specified in the Charities Act 2009. Members of school boards of management are the trustees of the charitable body.
