Today, Educate Together operates a national network of 118 schools in Ireland – 97 primary and 21 second-level, catering to over 40,000 students. Demand continues to grow for Educate Together’s model of education and the school network has grown substantially in recent years. There are currently two main ways new Educate Together schools can open.
New schools
The Government may decide to open new schools in response to population growth. Educate Together and local parent-led campaign groups will assess the demand and may launch a campaign for school patronage. Updates on new schools campaigns will be posted to this web page.
School patronage transfers
In 2025, the Department of Education and Youth conducted its long-awaited Primary School Survey, giving families across Ireland the opportunity to have their say on the type of schools they want in their communities. The results, published in April 2026, showed that 40% of parents with children in religious run schools would prefer a multi-denominational / equality-based primary school. Educate Together looks forward to working with the Department to expand school choice nationwide under this programme. Find more information here.
