Board Succession Planning: A Message for Board Members

Welcome Back to a New School Year

September is a busy month as schools settle in new students, families, and staff — and in some cases, move into new buildings.

September always brings fresh dynamics and challenges, and boards of management will soon hold their first meetings. We know that many boards have already been working over the summer, with some taking no break at all.

For some board members, this is a natural time to review volunteering commitments. In particular, chairpersons and patron nominees may be considering this their final year, planning to step down when the board changes over in December 2027.

Succession Planning: Early Notice Makes All the Difference

Educate Together’s national office works year-round to recruit suitable volunteers for the roles of patron nominee and chairperson. We work closely with principals and outgoing members to identify and appoint suitable candidates when members step down.

Planned-for appointments are most successful and least disruptive for the board. If you are thinking of stepping down next year, please let us know as soon as possible. Early notice greatly improves our chances of finding a suitable replacement.

Succession planning is always advisable. The Charities Regulator recommends a maximum term of nine years on one board.

If you are approaching this limit, or simply feel ready for a break, please email us at BOMappointments@educatetogether.ie, or complete the form here.

We look forward to working with you to find a suitable nominee for your board.
