Welcoming the Junior Cycle Reform Proposals

Educate Together welcomes Minister Quinn’s backing of the NCCA junior cycle reform proposals.

The endorsement by Minister Quinn of NCCA proposals for junior cycle reform have been welcomed by Educate Together. Educate Together has been calling for reform at second-level for many years.

CEO of Educate Together, Paul Rowe, said: “The news that there will be radical changes in the way junior cycle students are taught is very positive indeed. We particularly welcome the way the NCCA proposals will allow schools to have more autonomy and flexibility in how they teach the curriculum. The move away from students rote-learning  for a single terminal examination to a greater focus on continuous assessment is also a step forward, and one that we have long advocated in our own plans for second-level.”

In 2009 Educate Together published Taking the Next Step: A Blueprint for Educate Together Second-level Schools. Many of the new teaching approaches and curriculum reforms the Blueprint advocated are reflected in the NCCA’s proposals.

Educate Together is fully committed to implementing the NCCA reforms in its second-level schools. Educate Together was formally recognized as a second-level patron by the Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairi Quinn, in May of 2011.
Educate Together is currently applying to open schools in Lusk, Drogheda, Greystones and Dublin 15. For more information on Educate Together at second-level, visit our second-level campaign page here.
