Time For 16 Communities To Get Their Reconfigured Schools

As Minister for Education Richard Bruton TD announced his intention to reinvigorate the reconfiguration process last week, Educate Together now proposes that the Department of Education expedite the reconfiguration of schools in 16 areas that were promised schools by the State in 2013.

Parents in these 16 areas were surveyed and chose Educate Together as their favoured patron. We now call on the Department to honour these commitments. Originally conceived as a 'no cost' solution to providing school choice, the Minister's announcement last week suggested the paying of rent to 'landowners'. Therefore we can now assume that reconfiguration is no longer a 'no cost' initiative and that negotiations can begin to provide school choice to families in the following areas:

Educate Together is prepared to work with the Department of Education and relevant stakeholders to open these schools as soon as possible. In 2013, parental preference was placed at the centre of the reconfiguration process and parents chose Educate Together. Now is the time to provide these schools for hundreds of parents around Ireland.
