Core Funding

We warmly welcome Minister Hanafin's announcement on December 12th, 2005 of increased funding for Educate Together's National Office and for new schools. We appreciate her response to our lobbying and view this announcement as the first step in the right direction. A sincere Thank You to everyone who supported us thus far.

With the Minister's recent announcement, our grant from the State has been increased to 24% of our expenditure. Clearly we cannot sustain our services to exisiting schools or respond to further demand unless we receive adequate Core State Funding.

Why does Educate Together need money from the State?

  • Educate Together has worked with local parent-led volunteer groups to open new schools across Ireland on behalf of the State. There are now 41 Educate Together schools nationwide with demand in up to 55 further areas. Educate Together is only submitting applications for new schools in 2007 in locations in which the State is providing permanent buildings. This is due to the failure of the State to put in place a workable and realistic system whereby new schools can be established. Educate Together hopes that the state will review their position on the system of school opening and allow Educate Together to continue providing choice to Irish parents.
  • Educate Together schools are learning spaces of equality, respect and democracy. They are open to all children and are legally obliged to provide equality of access and esteem to children and their families “irrespective of social, cultural or religious backgrounds"
  • As the State does not open any new schools itself, Educate Together takes on the challenge of opening schools in areas of rapid housing growth and among new communities. These are often areas where there is a chronic shortage of school places
  • Educate Together works in partnership with the State and other education providers and contributes innovatively to the management of the national education system.
